Volcanology and Geothermal Energy. Los Alamos National Laboratory, with support from the U. Department of Energy, has been developing geothermal energy technology for nearly 20 years. The technology and experimental verification concepts developed by the Laboratory's Hot Dry Rock Program have demonstrated tremendous potential for what is now known as heat mining—the creation of a man-made heat-exchange system in hot, fractured rock. This method was developed because much of the Earth's crustal heat resources are found in impermeable rock that is not capable of supporting the hydrothermal system required for a traditional geothermal resource. Geologists at Los Alamos have contributed to the fundamental aspects of this geothermal energy program since its inception.
Shallow outgassing changes disrupt steady lava lake activity, Kilauea Volcano. Persistent lava lakes are a testament to sustained magma supply and outgassing in basaltic systems, and the surface activity of lava lakes has been used to infer processes in the underlying magmatic system. We observe that steady activity is characterized by continuous southward motion of the lake 's surface and slow changes in lava level, seismic tremor and gas emissions. This normal, steady activity can be abruptly interrupted by the appearance of spattering - sometimes triggered by rockfalls - on the lake surface, which abruptly shifts the lake surface motion, lava level and gas emissions to a more variable, unstable regime. The lake commonly alternates between this a normal, steady activity and b unstable behavior several times per day. The spattering represents outgassing of shallowly accumulated gas in the lake.

The early development and growth of oceanic volcanoes that eventually grow to become ocean islands are poorly known. The summit records a nested series of caldera and pit crater collapse events, uplift of one resurgent block, and eruptions that formed at least five low lava shields that shaped the summit. The resurgent block was uplifted slightly more than m and has a tilted surface with a dip of about 6. The resurgent block was then modified by collapse of a pit crater centered in the block that formed West Pit. These low hummocky and channelized flows had molten cores and now host the FeMO hydrothermal field.
Metrics details. Continuously operating thermal cameras are becoming more common around the world for volcano monitoring, and offer distinct advantages over conventional visual webcams for observing volcanic activity. The cameras are long-wave, temperature-calibrated models protected in custom enclosures, and often positioned on crater rims close to active vents. Images are transmitted back to the observatory in real-time, and numerous Matlab scripts manage the data and provide automated analyses and alarms. Webcams are now a standard and essential component of effective volcano monitoring Kirianov et al.
