A Defense of Pluralism and Equality, Michael Walzer's Spheres of Justice

Walzer argues in favour of an idea he calls " complex equality ", and against the view that goods with different meaning and content can be lumped together into the larger category of primary goods , as is advocated by John Rawls , in his A Theory of Justice Spheres of Justice has, together with Just and Unjust Wars and Interpretation and Social Criticism , been identified as one of Walzer's most important works by the philosopher Will Kymlicka. michael walzer complex equality

Complex equality is the theory of distributive justice proposed by Michael Walzer in Spheres of Justice As an account of justice based on social practices and institutions, the theory is communitarian in its approach and poses obstacles for thinking of distributive justice in global terms. Such a communitarian approach, however, would be open to thinking of global distributive justice if, as a matter of fact, the relevant social practices and institutions have themselves become more globalized. The theory begins with an account of goods. It is these social goods that concern distributive justice in any case. For a good to have a social meaning means that the reason why it is valued is based in some ways on a particular set of social practices or institutions embedded in

M. Walzer and contemporary communitarianism

This article is concerned with social and political equality. On account of its normally positive connotation, it has a rhetorical power rendering it suitable as a political slogan Westen At least since the French Revolution, equality has served as one of the leading ideals of the body politic; in this respect, it is at present probably the most controversial of the great social ideals. There is controversy concerning the precise notion of equality, the relation of justice and equality the principles of equality , the material requirements and measure of the ideal of equality equality of what?

Michael Walzer may be understood as making two major contributions to global justice debates. On the one hand, he contributes to just war theory and the theory of humanitarian intervention, the idea that force in international politics should be justified by appeal to human rights. On the other hand, he advances the theory of global pluralism, as a response to social, economic, and political globalization, and the dilemma of global unity or anarchy. In addition to these two contributions to global justice debates, he is perhaps best known for his earlier contributions to communitarian theory in the context of the modern state, especially, his defense of cultural particularism over universalism and his notion of complex equality.

Complex equality is a theory of justice outlined by Michael Walzer in his work Spheres of Justice. It is considered innovative because of its emphasis on the broader conceptualization of distribution, which covers not only tangible goods but also abstract goods such as rights. The theory posits that inequalities in several spheres of society should not invade one another.

This chapter introduces the idea of distributive justice. It identifies several different views of what characterizes distributive justice, as opposed to other types of justice and to non-justice-based moral demands. The preconditions of distributive justice, its primary subject and its object, and its normative significance are discussed. The chapter then suggests that bringing the diversity of usages of the concept of distributive justice into view helps cast light on some of the many contemporary debates about distributive justice and its limits. This chapter also introduces and outlines the different topics covered by the different sections and chapters of the book.
