The presence of war elephants in the Near East between the late third and early seventh centuries, and especially in Romano-Sasanian conflicts, is frequently reported in a wide variety of contemporary sources. The purpose of this paper is to examine the evidence for the military use of elephants over this period. This study gives particular attention to the literary concerns of individual authors, whether writing in Latin, Greek, Armenian, or Arabic, which might have influenced their inclusion of vivid depictions of war elephants. Informed by comparative evidence from Indian sources, this assessment also identifies a more diverse range of military applications and capabilities of elephants than in the 'classic' age of elephant warfare in the Hellenistic period. Military technology , range of weapons, equipment, structures, and vehicles used specifically for the purpose of warfare. It includes the knowledge required to construct such technology , to employ it in combat, and to repair and replenish it. The technology of war may be divided into five categories. Offensive arms harm the enemy, while defensive weapons ward off offensive blows. Transportation technology moves soldiers and weaponry; communications coordinate the movements of armed forces; and sensors detect forces and guide weaponry. From the earliest times, a critical relationship has existed between military technology, the tactics of its employment, and the psychological factors that bind its users into units.

Although there has been a tendency in modern scholarship on the Roman Empire in late antiquity early third to early seventh century BCE to view the period through the lens of transformation rather than violent upheaval, warfare undoubtedly became more frequent, at least compared with the first two centuries BCE, and impacted on regions of the empire long insulated from significant military conflict. The empire of late antiquity faced more significant external challenges, as well as more regular bouts of civil war.
The wars of late antiquity remain obscure to all but specialists. In the discipline of international relations IR , all know the name Thucydides. The same cannot be said of Procopius, the great historian of the wars of Justinian, the Eastern Roman emperor from AD to As if to remedy this, Peter Heather has written a wide-ranging account of the wars of Justinian with a distinctly modern feel. A specialist in this period, Heather sees more universal patterns of warfare, occupation, and strategic failure.
