Parkinson's disease PD patients are deficient in time estimation. This deficit improves after dopamine DA treatment and it has been associated with decreased internal timekeeper speed, disruption of executive function and memory retrieval dysfunction. The aim of the present study was to explore the neurophysiologic correlates of this deficit.

The Basal Ganglia

The ability to flexibly adjust movement timing is important for everyday life. Although the basal ganglia and cerebellum have been implicated in monitoring of supra- and sub-second intervals, respectively, the underlying neuronal mechanism remains unclear. Here, we show that in monkeys trained to generate a self-initiated saccade at instructed timing following a visual cue, neurons in the caudate nucleus kept track of passage of time throughout the delay period, while those in the cerebellar dentate nucleus were recruited only during the last part of the delay period. Conversely, neuronal correlates of trial-by-trial variation of self-timing emerged earlier in the cerebellum than the striatum. Local inactivation of respective recording sites confirmed the difference in their relative contributions to supra- and sub-second intervals.

Findings suggest that the physiological mechanisms involved in the reward anticipation and time perception partially overlap. But the systematic investigation of a potential interaction between time and reward systems using neuroimaging is lacking. Eighteen healthy volunteers all right-handed participated in an event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging fMRI experiment that employs a visual paradigm that consists monetary reward to assess whether the functional neural representations of time perception and reward prospection are shared or distinct.

This text presents the contemporary understanding of the basal ganglia. In a groundbreaking synthesis, diverse research perspectives grounded in neuroscience and neurobiology are bought together to reflect an integrated understanding of these deep brain structures. The volume clarifies and broadens perspectives of the basal ganglia that have over the past few decades extended its functional-anatomic roles far beyond motor-centered models.

Temporal prediction TP is needed to anticipate future events and is essential for survival.
