John Dewey was a leading proponent of the American school of thought known as pragmatism , a view that rejected the dualistic epistemology and metaphysics of modern philosophy in favor of a naturalistic approach that viewed knowledge as arising from an active adaptation of the human organism to its environment. On this view, inquiry should not be understood as consisting of a mind passively observing the world and drawing from this ideas that if true correspond to reality, but rather as a process which initiates with a check or obstacle to successful human action, proceeds to active manipulation of the environment to test hypotheses, and issues in a re-adaptation of organism to environment that allows once again for human action to proceed. With this view as his starting point, Dewey developed a broad body of work encompassing virtually all of the main areas of philosophical concern in his day. He also wrote extensively on social issues in such popular publications as the New Republic , thereby gaining a reputation as a leading social commentator of his time. The eldest sibling died in infancy, but the three surviving brothers attended the public school and the University of Vermont in Burlington with John.

Home Issues VI-2 Symposia. Language or Experience Linguistic Pragmatism and Cultura The fundamental issue is not, I contend, between types of pragmatism at all but between conceptions of human nature and what a human life is. John Stuart Mill once said of Bentham that, for an empiricist, he had really very little experience, especially of human nature. I am afraid that the same judgment here is passed on those wishing to dispense with experience and somehow retain pragmatism. This is done to update pragmatism and make it socially acceptable to analytically trained philosophers. In doing so it seems unaware of a larger and richer semiotic approach to meaning or a larger and richer view of experience beyond the circumscribed issue of knowledge.

In addition, Dewey developed extensive and often systematic views in ethics, epistemology, logic, metaphysics, aesthetics, and philosophy of religion. Because Dewey typically took a genealogical approach that couched his own view within the larger history of philosophy, one may also find a fully developed metaphilosophy in his work. Set within the larger picture of Darwinian evolutionary theory, philosophy should be seen as an activity undertaken by interdependent organisms-in-environments. This standpoint, of active adaptation, led Dewey to criticize the tendency of traditional philosophies to abstract and reify concepts derived from living contexts. As did other classical pragmatists, Dewey focused criticism upon traditional dualisms of metaphysics and epistemology e. Rather, human knowing is among the ways organisms with evolved capacities for thought and language cope with problems.

Freedom and Culture is a book by John Dewey. Published in , the book is an analytical defense of democracy written in a time when democratic regimes had recently been replaced by non-democratic ones, and at a time when Marxism was considered a powerful political force. According to Dewey, human nature is the result of many forces, many of which are culturally determined. Attempts have been made to explain human behavior as being primarily motivated by love of freedom, or by pursuit of self-interest, or by the pursuit of power, or being primarily determined by economic conditions.
As it happened, Charles Sanders Peirce was a faculty member at Johns Hopkins during this period and Dewey was stronglyinfluenced by several courses of study with Peirce. Peirce was the brilliant son of the famous Harvard mathematicianBenjamin Peirce and he had written a series of influential articles on the philosophy of science and epistemology. Anotherfamous Harvard faculty member had already been substantially influenced by Peirce; this was William James. From the 60sthrough the late 80s, James had made his way from physiology to psychology to philosophy, writing one of the most famous19th Century books on psychology along the way.
