Culture and Anarchy: An Essay in Political and Social Criticism

Matthew Arnold pp Cite as. However my sinuous, easy unpolemical mode of proceeding has been adopted by me first, because I really think it the best way of proceeding if one wants to get at, and keep with, truth; secondly because I am convinced only by a literary form of this kind being given to them can ideas such as mine ever gain any access in a country such as ours. These notes were contributed by members of the GradeSaver community. The opening chapter is where the author lays down the fundamental foundation of his perspective of the definition of culture. In seeking perfection, there are two requirements: an eagerness to learn based on seeing things as they really are and the effort to ensure that the rest of society is constructed upon this knowledge and recognition. As a result, the irony is that culture is never completed because perfection cannot be attained; culture is always in flux and adaptable.

Culture and Anarchy :: Matthew Arnold

The disparagers of culture make its motive curiosity; sometimes, indeed, they make its motive mere exclusiveness and vanity. The culture which is supposed to plume itself on a smattering of Greek and Latin is a culture which is begotten by nothing so intellectual as curiosity; it is valued either out of sheer vanity and ignorance, or else as an engine of social and class distinction, separating its holder, like a badge or title, from other people who have not got it. No serious man would call this culture, or attach any value to it, as culture, at all.

The first chapter of the work was originally entitled, "Culture and its Enemies," and was his last lecture as Professor of Poetry at Oxford in June ; in July, this lecture was published in Cornhill Magazine. The essay spurred a number of responses, and soon, Arnold's attempts to respond to these responses grew into a sequence of essays in Cornhill published between January to August These essays would later form the collection, Culture and Anarchy. Arnold added a preface, introduction, and conclusion to the book edition, but the essays generally remained in their original forms. Later editions , , tended to omit many of the specific personal and topical references since so much of Arnold's work was wedded to debates and discourses immediately contemporary with original publication. My summary and analyses are based on the book edition.
